Type. Mexico, Sonora, southern range of the Sierra Baboquivari, and southeastward, in fertile valleys; Arthur C. V. Schott 6. [Most of the Baboquivari range is in Pima County, Arizona, where it extends N into the Quinlan Range].

Vorkommen.
USA. Arizona. Mexico. Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa. Sonora Wüste in verschiedenen Bodenformationen in 200-1100 m Höhe.

Buschartig, Wuchshöhe bis 1,5-3 m, variabel dicht verzweigt, (s. Benson 1982, 332, Fig. 315) Triebe graugrün, 6-23 cm lang, 2-3,5 cm Durchmesser, gehöckert, Areolen wollig, Dornen 2-6, 1-2 cm lang.

Blüte rosa bis magentafarben, bis 2 cm lang und Durchmesser, Frucht varibael, fleischig, graugrün, bis 3 cm, hängende Reihe bildend.

Charkteristisch sind die verbreiteten, herabhängenden, reihenbildende Früchte.

In Kontrast zu Subspecies fulgida werden Unterschiede der Gesamterscheinung, und Dornenstruktur zu Subspecies mamillata deutlich.

Hybriden sind bekannt.

Weltweit in Kultur. Gleichwohl invasiv.

Das Artepitheton lat. 'mamilla' bedeutet warzenförmig.
