Sclerocactus parviflorus ssp. variiflorus wächst einzeln, kugelförmig, Wurzelsystem faserig, Epidermis grün , 4-10 cm lang und breit, offene Bedornung, Rippen 10-14, Mitteldornen, 2-4, davon 1 hakenförmig, papierartig 2-8 cm lang, unregelmäßig angeordnet, grau, gelb bis braun, 8-12 Randdornen 10-14, variabel angeordnet,1-3 cm, weiß bis grau.
Blüten glockenförmig, gelb, rosa, weiß, manchmal mit weißen, rosa, braunen Streifen, bis 30 mm lang und breit. Die Blüten erscheinen kranzförmig um den Scheitel.
Blühperiode: Juni.
Kapselfrüchte kugelförmig, braun in der Reife, 10-12 mm lang und breit. Samen schwarz bis hellbraun, papillate (In Hochstätter, (2005) Frank, 60 fh 29.4 REM) nierenförmig, 1-2 mm lang und breit.
Sclerocactus parviflorus ssp. variiflorus, Vertreter der Sektion Parviflori, wächst begrenzt in Sandboden in offenem Waldland, nur auf Höhelagen von 1900-2100 m beschränkt in der Great Basin Wüste in Arizona.
Verbreitungskarten/Distribution maps
Am westlichen Rand des Verbreitungsgebietes finden sich Zwischenformen zum typischen Sclerocactus parviflorus, während am südlichen Rand Übergangsformen zu Sclerocactus whipplei vorkommen. Jungpflanzen sind durch ihre Bedornung deutlich unterscheidbar von weiteren Arten der Sektion Parviflori.
Die wurzelechte Kultivierung in Europa ist schwierig. Jedoch ist die Pfropfung auf frostharte Unterlagen wie Echinocereus-Arten oder Opuntia-Arten erfolgreich. Für das Glashaus ist z.B. Eriocereus jusbertii zu empfehlen. Allerdings verlieren die gepfropften Pflanzen ihr natürliches Aussehen.
Die Art ist bei trockenem Stand winterhart bis minus 20 °C. Die wurzelechte Kultivierung in Europa ist schwierig. Jedoch ist die Pfropfung auf frostharte Unterlagen wie Echinocereus oder Opuntia erfolgreich. Für Glashauskultivierung ist z. B. Eriocereus jusbertii zu empfehlen, jedoch verlieren die gepfropften Pflanzen ihr natürliches Aussehen.
Die Populationen sind auf jeweils wenige Pflanzen beschränkt und durch Umwelteinflüsse stark gefährdet (u. a. Extreme Trockenheit).
Das Epitheton der Art bezieht sich auf die Variabilität der Blütenfarbe.
