Die differenzierte Bearbeitung innerhalb der Familie Nolinaceae der Gattungen Beaucarnea, Lemaire (1861), Calibanus, Rose (1906), Nolina, Michaux, (1803), Dasylirion, Zuccarini, (1838), führten zu unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen der Autoren Trelease (1911), Duvall et al. (1993), Hernández-Sandoval (1993), Eguiarte et al. (1994), Chase et al. (1995), Bogler & Simpson (1995, 1996), Eguiarte (1995), Rudall et al. (2000), Yamashita & Tamura (2000).

Phylogenetische und morphologische Studien der Familie Nolinaceae (Beaucarnea, Calibanus, Dasylirion und Nolina) mit dokumentiertem Material wurden durchgeführt. Innerhalb der Familie Nolinaceae ist nun Calibanus in Beaucarnea klassifiziert. Die vorgelegten Daten bedürfen der Spezifizierung (Rojas-Piña et al. 2014). Die nicht eindeutig klassifizierten und nicht erwähnten Spezies bedürfen weiterer Untersuchungen.

Sieben Spezies sind endemisch in Mexiko in semiariden und trockenen tropischen Regionen verbreitet.
Zwei Spezies (Beaucernea pliabilis, Beaucarnea goldmanii) kommen südlich, in Nord Zentral Amerika, in Guatemala, Belize, Honduras und Salvador vor. (Rose 1906, Henández, 1993, Lott & Garcia-Mendoza, 1994, Rivera-Lugo & Solano, 2012, Rojas-Piña et al., 2014).

Einige Arten wurden/werden ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhundert in Mediterranen Regionen in Europa kultiviert und weltweit kommerzialisiert.
